Sometime last week we linked with Ogechi Christine Kalu, the founder of TeensThink Initiative, a social awareness organization and she told us about the processes, challenges and rewards in pursuing a course for the society.
Dig in and tell us what you think in the comments section.
1. May we know you?
Ans. Am Ogechi Christine Kalu, Founder of Teens Think Initiative, an advocate of the Sustainable development goals, the last out of 5 children, From Ebem Ohafia in Abia State.
2. Why the name T2i?
Ans. Smiles…. well I didn’t even go through a hard process or crack my mind to come up with a name. The name “Teens Think” has been in one of my diaries for like ages, thing is, once a word(s) comes to my head during odd hours I just jot them down, and truly they’d end up making sense later. Soon it was due for an initiative, after outlining the vision and objectives of the initiative “Teens Think” was more appropriate, because the idea is to gradually build a community of young girls who “think” through evey step and action.
3. What birthed this initiative?
Ans. I always knew I was going to start up something to give back to the society and help young girls, women and the world in generally, but let’s just say I was scared and felt I was too young to take up such a big task, I felt I needed all the money in the world to do that. The turning point was when I was faced with a very huge decision in my life, to make compromises in order to retain my position in an organization as a staff. I was almost depressed as a result, at that point I realized that this was the case of 1 in 5 young girls, having to “give something to get something” or ” give something to maintain a position” so very unfair to the woman race how we actually have to face sexual harassment (whether mild or harsh) in offices and we are advice to keep shut and make compromises….shhhhh……This gave the fire in me some gasoline, I needed to do my own quarter to make girls understand they can actually choose the right way, right path and not give in to the world’s selfish demands, they can own their world and decide what happens in it, they can achieve anything if they believe in it!! And it steered up something in me, Evey girl needs EDUCATION no matter how little.
4. What are you planning to achieve with this initiative?
Ans. We hope to achieve a culture of Respect for Women, a community where girl child deeply matters, while doing that the goal is to also give young girls something to hold onto via mentorship, Empowerment or through other T2i adopted methods. In the Long run we hope to have centres for rehabilitation mainly for female drug addicts, Healing centers for rape victims and domestic violence victims….and so many other Long run plans. In the meantime, With the help of T2i Volunteers and volunteer coordinators nation wide we hope to touch every aspect of women and girl’s basic challenges and generally try to put smiles on faces.
5. What is the scope of this initiative?
Ans. T2i is a new voice for African Female Child, by that, we intend to spread round Africa with volunteers and their coordinators doing great social exploits. For now we have achieved that in Zimbabwe, we are hoping that more volunteers would spring forth in the nearest future. We believe that we all are empowered to empower so we try to do just that.
6. Is this movement opened to sponsorship or do you wanna run it alone?
Ans. Very much open to sponsorship as a matter of fact we have a girl under primary school scholarship her fees are being paid by a philanthropist. We are also open to partnership, Donations of any kinds wether material or monetary. As we are planning on the free classes for Girls we much later intend to extend to female Adult education, people have already started donating books, bags and other school materials. We have a thousand and one project to carry out on our sleeves..how can we reject sponsorship?
7. Before this initiative, who was ogechi?
Ans. Lol…..say, there’s no before and after for me, the only significant change is I’m not sitting in the four walls of a studio presenting currently. I was someone who was hungry to discover “other” purpose, other because I had discovered one and still felt I wasn’t fully empty. I felt I didn’t just come all the way to be a single thing, I was created to be “Plenty” to touch all corners of the earth giving my best. It all happened that I got the needed pain to push me towards true happiness.
8. Apart from this initiative which you have officially launched on the 24May in Owerri, Imo state, what else are we to expect from Ogechi?
Ans. I’d prefer to let action speak, but like I said I’m on a journey to uncover every single purpose behind my creation, meaning that alot of passion would be explored, I am no longer the girl that’s scared of failing, infact failure is my greatest energy boost…However, for now it’s all about my Baby T2i..The world need help right now, we just have to play our parts.
9. You were once a Radio personnel, are you planning on going back?
Ans. Once? Lol, I once told a very good friend and I should say again Radio is my first love, it is jealous, and demands attention, going down that relationship wouldn’t give me much needed time to explore my depth. I have always been a radio person, the break won’t hurt. Just pushing other passion, giving way for other potentials to unleash.
10. Your advice the general public using the vision of T2i.
Ans. Don’t ever choose to settle for less, note that you deserve MORE and act accordingly. Fear is a disease, you haven’t tried it out just yet, how are you sure it would fail?
